Fabia Mantwill

BIO

Fabia Mantwill is one of the most striking young talents in the contemporary jazz scene, celebrated as Germany’s Jazz genius! She is an award – winning composer, conductor, arranger, saxophonist and vocalist, currently signed to the GroundUP label. In 2021 Fabia Mantwill received the German Jazz Award for „arrangement of the year“.

Her large-scale works merges jazz, contemporary classical, and orchestral storytelling. At the center of her work is the Fabia Mantwill Orchestra, a genre-crossing ensemble that expands the possibilities of the modern orchestra. The Berlin based multi talent seamlessly combines jazz, classical music, and world music influences to create a contrasting ensemble sound full of energy. Her sound can be dark and velvety one moment, then crisp and full of funk appeal the next. The 30-year-old Berlin native skillfully juggles contrasts and sharp differences to create an organic unity. This is also reflected in the sound of her “Large Ensemble,” where energetic brass meets a powerful rhythm section alongside delicate strings and a lyrical harp. This blend is no coincidence, as Fabia Mantwill strives to harmoniously combine American jazz, European classical music, and African and Latin American rhythms.

In 2018, Fabia Mantwill was chosen by Vince Mendoza to write arrangements and compositions for the Metropole Orchestra featuring Becca Stevens. Last November, her orchestral work “Sasa ndio Sasa” had its world premiere at the Elbphilharmonie in Hamburg, where she performed as a composer, conductor, and soloist.
